3 Myths About Clean Beauty

We all believe things about beauty. The industry is saturated with how-to's and a wealth of amazing makeup, skincare and haircare products that are ‘natural’. But do they really work? Is it worth it to switch? What if you have been using the non-natural stuff for years, should you switch now?

The answer is yes! Keep reading.

The damage is already done.

So here's the thing, people think that because they have used products it can they now know contain toxic ingredients for most of their lives but it doesn't make a difference if they switch now. But I have good news, that isn’t the case!

The 2016 HERMOSA study found that after just 3 days of using clean cosmetics (cosmetics that did not include parabens, phthalates, oxybenzone, or other endocrine disrupting ingredients), a group of teenage girls showed a significant drop in toxins in their systems. They changed out one area of personal care products and in less than a week they carried a lighter toxic load. This is huge! Simple changes, do make a difference. Pretty encouraging, right?

It is too expensive.

So you want to “go green” but are still waiting for the appearance of your fairy godmother to tell you there is a secret trust fund with your name on it? Not to worry, you have some options. Remember, this does not have to be a complete overhaul in order to make a difference. Slow and steady can pay off!

I recommend switching out one product that you use on your skin (aka our largest organ) every single day. That way, you are taking one step in the right direction everyday and as we just learned, cutting out any toxic products will reduce your exposure significantly. The next step I suggest is to take a look at the new products you are bringing into your home and and consider switching to a safer option. Use what you have an when you need to restock a particular item, switch Bonus: In my experience, cleaner products typically contain less filler ingredients and therefore last a lot longer their toxic counterparts. Can we say, “win?!”

I don’t deserve it.

Okay, so most people don’t say this out right but it is one of the most common obstacles I see. It usually comes in some form of "I just don't spend money on myself" or "I don't have time for that.” I get it. In today's world "self-care" is portrayed as something that is self-indulgent and luxurious or something that you truly have to earn. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Find 5 minutes in your day to slow down and breathe, drink an extra glass of water, saying “no” to signing up for a task you know you can’t complete without sacrificing something else. All of these can be a sign of caring for yourself. Give yourself permission to look at your personal needs and know that the better you take care of yourself, the better you will be able to take care of your responsibilities.

By simply taking a moment to assess your health, finding out where you are exposed to harm, and making a strategic plan to change will help you make positive strides in your health without taking over your life. You are important and your health matters. Set an attainable goal that you can meet and then set the next one higher. Commit to switching one product a month to a safer option and before you know it, you will have cleaned up a large part of your routine.
